How to get an Expedia receipt or hotel invoice

Expedia

With Expedia, two documents can matter: Expedia's own receipt for what you paid it, and the hotel's invoice for the stay. They're not the same thing.

Expedia's receipt

Expedia's help center says you can get a receipt from the itinerary page itself: open the trip and choose Print receipt or Get receipt. Expedia also emails a booking confirmation when you book. If you need a receipt for tax purposes, the help center tells you to reach out to the travel provider, such as your hotel or airline.

Pay now or pay at the property

  • Pay now: you paid in full when you booked, and the receipt from the itinerary page is your proof of purchase. Anything charged to the room during the stay, such as Wi-Fi or the minibar, comes on a separate receipt from the hotel at checkout.
  • Pay at property: the hotel charges you at check-in or check-out, and you get the receipt from the hotel when the stay ends.

A receipt isn't a tax invoice

Expedia Group's own documentation says a booking receipt for a prepaid booking can serve as proof of payment, but it isn't a tax invoice. For a stay paid at the property, the hotel issues the receipt or tax invoice, and Expedia can't provide it.

Car rentals

For a pay-later rental, you pay the car rental company and get its receipt, with all the fees and taxes, when you return the car. For a pay-now rental, the itinerary receipt is your proof of purchase, and the rental company can also give you a copy of the rental contract with its receipt.

Packages

A package receipt from the itinerary page shows the total you paid. Your bank or card statement may still list separate charges for the flight, the hotel and the other parts of the package.

What to keep for an expense claim

Keep Expedia's receipt as proof of payment, and ask the hotel for its itemized folio at check-out. In Canada, the folio is what shows the hotel's GST/HST and QST numbers and the lodging tax where it applies.

An Expedia trip in one place

Expedia's confirmation and the hotel's folio usually reach your inbox separately. Email receipt capture picks up both and reads each tax line. If the hotel gives you paper at checkout, photograph it in the Smartbills app, and the booking and the stay sit together on one expense report.
