Add Smartbills to your AI assistant

Connect the assistant you already use, then ask about your receipts, expenses and bills in plain words.

  1. Pick your AI assistant

Each one connects a little differently. Choose yours for the exact steps.

  2. Connect Smartbills

In Claude, open Customize, then Connectors, choose Add custom connector and paste the server URL. Works on claude.ai and in Claude Desktop.

    Server URL

    https://mcp.smartbills.io/mcp
  3. Sign in to Smartbills

The first time your assistant uses Smartbills, it opens the sign-in page. Sign in and pick the business it can see. There's no API key to create, and you can disconnect it at any time.

  4. Try it out

Smartbills is connected. Copy one of these to get started.

    • Find my Uber receipts from last month.
    • How much did we spend on meals in October?
    • Which bills are due this week?
    • Which expenses are still missing a receipt?
    • Create an expense report for my Toronto trip.

Add Smartbills as a connector in your AI assistant and it can find spend, build expense reports and clear approvals, asking you before each change.

Answers from your live expense data

Ask in plain language and the assistant searches expenses by date, amount, category, vendor, status or employee, reads receipts and line items, and totals spend by category, vendor, department, employee or month. Ask what needs a receipt or an approval and it answers from your actual policy, not a general guess.

  • Expenses, expense reports, receipts, vendors and employees
  • Spend totals grouped the way you ask
  • Policy rules and open violations, explained

Nothing changes without your yes

Creating an expense, building or submitting a report, approving, rejecting and waiving a policy violation all ask you to confirm first. Submitting runs the policy check and refuses on a blocking violation, and rejecting or waiving always needs a reason.

  • Confirmation before every write
  • Policy check before a report is submitted
  • Approve or reject the reports waiting for you

Your permissions, and never more

You sign in to Smartbills, choose which business the assistant may act on and review the permissions it asks for. The assistant only sees the tools your role allows, every call is checked again on our side, and each change it makes is written to the audit log with your name and the assistant that made it.

Frequently asked questions

What people ask us before they sign up.

MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is an open standard that lets an AI assistant use tools and data from other software. An MCP server is the piece that exposes those tools. The Smartbills MCP server is hosted by Smartbills at https://mcp.smartbills.io/mcp. You connect to it rather than install anything.

Claude (claude.ai, Claude Desktop and Claude Code), ChatGPT on plans with connector support, Cursor, VS Code in agent mode, and any other client that supports remote MCP servers over Streamable HTTP with OAuth sign-in.

Read: search expenses, expense reports, receipts, vendors and employees, total spend, read your policy and its open violations, and dry-run the policy check on a report. Write, with your confirmation each time: create and update expenses, upload a receipt from a link, create, fill and submit expense reports, approve or reject reports waiting for you, and, for administrators, waive a policy violation with a reason.

Anything that moves money or changes who has access. Reimbursement payouts, payments, bank connections, bulk deletion, inviting users and subscription changes have no MCP tools. An assistant cannot do them even if asked.

The assistant signs in through OAuth as you, for the one business you choose, and only gets the permissions your role already has. Each tool call is checked again against your permissions on Smartbills' side, every write waits for your confirmation, and every change is recorded in the audit log with the user, the assistant and the business.

No. Your assistant pays for its own processing. Ordinary tool calls don't touch your Smartbills AI allowance. The one exception is importing a policy from a document, which runs on Smartbills' side and states its cost before it starts. Tool calls are subject to an hourly limit that depends on your plan.
