Receipts and invoices

In Québec, a taxi receipt isn't a courtesy. Since November 1, 2021, a taxi operator must give every customer a bill, without delay, at the end of every ride, on paper or electronically. It's one of Revenu Québec's mandatory billing measures.

What the bill contains

The bill is produced by a certified sales recording system (SRS). It includes a QR code with a web address, and an electronic bill must also carry a "View the transaction online" link under the code. Depending on the situation, notes such as "PAYMENT RECEIVED" or "ORIGINAL BILL" must appear. Since January 1, 2026, operators must use a second-generation certified SRS.

The fare type on the bill

Each bill names how the fare was set. Revenu Québec lists five values: Tarif taxi. for a taximeter fare, Tarif odo. when the odometer was used, Tarif fixe r. for a fixed fare set by regulation or by zone, such as an airport run, Tarif horaire for an hourly rate, and Tarif app. when a web or mobile app set the price. A bill can also say Majoration when the price went up because demand was very high.

Shared rides

When passengers who booked separately share a ride and its cost through an app, each one gets a separate bill marked Partage, with the number of people splitting the fare. The per-ride fee is divided too: Revenu Québec's example shows $0.30 on each bill when a $0.90 fee is shared by three.

The QST number in the vehicle

Taxi operators have to be registered for GST/HST and QST whatever their annual sales. The operator's QST registration number must be displayed in the vehicle, readable from the back seat. Rides arranged only through a platform, where the number is visible when you book, are exempt from the display.

Always ask for it

You're entitled to the bill at the end of the ride. If you want an electronic copy, ask the driver before you pay. For an expense claim, it's the supporting document, with the GST and QST.

Taxi bills, filed

An emailed taxi bill is picked up by email receipt capture, with the GST and QST read separately. Photograph a paper bill in the Smartbills app as you step out of the cab, and the ride is added to your expense report.
