Receipts and invoices

To get a receipt from a business that uses Square, check the email or text you gave at checkout: Square sends it in the seller's name. Lost it? Search your inbox for the business's name, or ask the business to resend it from their Square transactions with the date, amount and last four digits of your card.

Getting the receipt at checkout

After you pay, Square's receipt screen asks for a phone number or an email address. Enter one and the receipt arrives by text or email. It's itemized: each item with its quantity, any discount and the taxes charged.

If you've asked for automatic receipts at a Square seller before, you may not be asked at all. Square sends the receipt straight to the email address you chose, at any Square seller where you pay with the same card.

Choosing where your receipts go

Square Profile is the customer side of Square. Go to profile.squareup.com, enter your phone number or email address, and sign in with the code Square sends you. There you can update the email and phone number Square remembers for receipts, manage marketing emails from Square sellers, and download or delete your data. Square's receipt settings in Square Profile are available in the US and Canada.

If you lost the receipt

Start with your inbox and your texts: search for the business's name, because the receipt is sent in the seller's name. If it isn't there, ask the business to resend it. Square keeps every payment in the seller's records, and resending is quick on their side:

  • In the Square app: Transactions, select the payment, then New Receipt.
  • In Square Dashboard: Transactions, find the payment by date, select it, then Send Receipt.

Give the business the date, the amount and the last four digits of your card so they can find the payment. Resending doesn't change your automatic receipt settings.

Square receipts as business expenses

A Square receipt carries what an expense claim or a sales tax credit needs: the seller, the date, the items and the tax. Keep the email or a PDF of it rather than a screenshot of the total. In Canada, a receipt of $100 or more also needs the seller's GST/HST registration number to support an input tax credit. Check that it's printed on the receipt.

Square receipts that file themselves

Emailed Square receipts land in your inbox, where email receipt capture picks them up and reads the seller, items and each tax line. Businesses that connect Square to Smartbills send digital receipts to your account the moment you pay, with nothing to forward. And if all you got was a paper slip, photograph it in the Smartbills app.
