Toast runs the point of sale in a lot of restaurants, bars and cafés. When you pay at one, the receipt comes out of Toast, and only the restaurant can send it again: Toast has no lookup where guests find their own receipts.
Getting the receipt after you pay
Once the check is paid, the restaurant can send you a digital copy by email or text message, or print one. If you want a digital copy, ask for it at the table or the counter, or choose it on the payment screen when it's offered.
A printed check handed over before you pay is not a receipt. It's the open bill. Ask for the receipt after payment if you need it for an expense claim.
If you lost the receipt
Contact the restaurant. Staff can find a paid check in Toast and resend it by email or text:
- Recent checks are in the payment terminal's paid and closed tabs, and the Receipt button reprints, emails or texts them.
- Older checks are found with Advanced Check Search, by check number or by the last four digits of the card you paid with, then emailed from the check's actions.
- From the back office, Toast Web can also find a check by number, customer information or card, and email or text the receipt.
Have the date, the time, the total and the last four digits of your card ready. Staff use them to confirm the match.
Restaurant receipts for business meals
For an expense claim, keep the itemized receipt, not the card slip with just the total. In Canada and the US, the deduction for business meals is generally limited to 50%, and in Canada the sales tax you can claim back on meals is limited the same way. Note who you met and why on the receipt or the claim while you still remember.
Toast receipts that file themselves
A Toast receipt sent by email reaches your inbox, where email receipt capture files it and reads the restaurant, items, tip and each tax line. Restaurants that connect Toast to Smartbills send digital receipts straight to your account when you pay. And a printed receipt can be photographed in the Smartbills app before you leave the table.
