How to get a Home Hardware receipt

Receipts and invoices

Home Hardware gives you the Official Sales Receipt when you pick up an online order or when a ship-to-home order arrives. The order confirmation email is not considered an official receipt. For store purchases, Home Hardware's pages describe no receipt lookup, and a return without a receipt is left to the store manager's discretion.

The confirmation email is not the receipt

An order on homehardware.ca sends a confirmation email first, then either a message titled "Your order is ready for pick-up" or a shipping confirmation with a tracking number. Home Hardware's help page answers the receipt question plainly: the confirmation doesn't count. The Official Sales Receipt travels with the goods, at the pickup counter or in the delivered box, and it's the one to file.

Finding and cancelling an online order

You can check out as a guest. An account saves your Scene+ card and payment methods and lets you track orders. Until an order has shipped or is ready for pickup, cancel it yourself through Order Status; once it's ready, call the pickup store. Credit cards are charged when every part of the order is ready to pick up or ship, while debit, gift cards and PayPal are captured when the order is placed.

Independent stores, local rules

The policy applies to Home Hardware, Home Hardware Building Centre and Home Building Centre stores, but every one is independently owned and may add conditions and exclusions. Lumber, building materials, furniture and major appliances sit outside the national return policy entirely and follow the local store's policy. Those are often the big-ticket items on a renovation, which makes it worth asking before you pay.

Returns within 90 days

Most regularly stocked items can come back within 90 days, unused, undamaged, in their original packaging and with the original bill of sale. Refunds go to the original payment method. Online purchases get 90 days from the day you receive them and can be returned to any Home Hardware store with the bill of sale and photo ID. Ship-to-home orders can also go back by mail, started from My Account or at 1-877-940-5081.

Without a receipt, the store manager decides: the return may be refused, or settled at the lowest selling price as a Home Hardware gift card or store credit. Photo ID may be required, and your Scene+ card is requested if points were earned or redeemed on the purchase. Cut materials, tinted paint and stain, special orders and final-sale items aren't returnable.

Buying for a job

The HH PRO desk takes orders in advance by phone, fax or email and books job-site deliveries. The Scotia Home Hardware PRO Visa Business Card earns Scene+ points on purchases. Since each store runs independently, ask yours what paperwork comes with a delivery.

For your GST/HST claim

According to the CRA, an input tax credit on a purchase of $100 or more needs a document showing the supplier's GST/HST registration number. File the Official Sales Receipt for that, not the confirmation email.

Home Hardware receipts, captured at pickup

The receipt that counts arrives on paper, at the counter or in the box. Take a photo in the Smartbills app while you load the car, and the items and tax lines are read and stored. Confirmation and shipping emails are filed from your inbox by email receipt capture, and each purchase can go straight onto an expense report.
