In Portugal, sellers report every invoice to the tax authority (AT), and the ones that carry your NIF appear in your area of the e-Fatura portal. That list is what the AT uses to calculate your personal income tax (IRS) deductions, which is why it is worth checking before the deadline each year.
Checking your invoices
Sign in to e-Fatura on the Portal das Finanças with your NIF and password, open the consumer area and choose to check invoices. Each line shows the seller, the date, the total and the VAT. Invoices appear up to the end of the month after they were issued; health and education invoices can come in later, up to the end of February of the next year. The list has no line items.
Validating pending invoices
An invoice is pending when the AT cannot tell which deduction it belongs to, usually because the seller works in more than one sector. Open the pending invoices, select each one and say whether it was for health, education, housing, the general family expenses or a professional activity. Each member of the household validates their own invoices. For 2025 invoices the deadline was March 2, 2026, since the end of February fell on a weekend; for 2026 invoices it is the end of February 2027. Invoices still pending after that are not counted automatically.
An invoice that is not there
If a seller did not report an invoice issued with your NIF, you can register it yourself in the same area, from the end of the month after it was issued until the end of February. Keep the paper invoice for four years.
After the deadline
From March 15 you can see the deductible expenses the AT calculated, and until March 31 you can complain about missing or wrong amounts.
Keeping the invoices themselves
e-Fatura proves that an invoice exists, not what it bought. Smartbills keeps the invoice itself, from a photo in the app or from the email it arrived in, with its items, every tax and the total.
