Receipts and invoices

Old Navy takes returns without a receipt when it can find the sale. Its store FAQ tells you to bring your Old Navy Rewards phone number or the credit card used for the purchase, and staff at any Old Navy location will help track it down. Returns and exchanges are free within 30 days of the purchase date for store buys, or of the delivery date for online orders. Final Sale items cannot come back.

Rewards phone number and card lookup in store

To return at any Old Navy store, bring the item with one of these:

  • your receipt
  • your Old Navy Rewards phone number
  • the credit card you paid with

Gap Inc.'s return FAQ, which covers Old Navy, lists the proof of purchase it accepts for a refund in the same spirit: the shipping confirmation email for online orders, the store receipt, or the original credit card.

Online orders at an Old Navy store

Online purchases can be returned or exchanged in a store, except items marked "return by mail only", items from third-party sellers, and orders placed through Shopify, Instagram Shop or Facebook Shop. The reverse does not work: everything bought in a store has to go back to a store, never by mail.

Returning to Old Navy without a receipt

Old Navy documents the lookup route clearly and stops there. Neither its store FAQ nor Gap Inc.'s return FAQ says what happens when your Rewards phone number and your card both fail to turn up the purchase. Ask at the store before you count on a refund.

Two cases are spelled out in Gap Inc.'s return FAQ. A gift returned without a gift receipt or invoice earns a merchandise certificate based on the item's current selling price, not what the giver paid. And a Kids' Guarantee return without a receipt falls back to Old Navy's standard return policy.

One more limit: returns go back to the brand that sold the item. Gap and Banana Republic purchases cannot be returned at Old Navy.

Old Navy receipts that do not depend on a phone number

Both lookups Old Navy lists rely on something tied to you at checkout, your Rewards number or your card. Buying uniforms or event T-shirts for a small team makes that receipt a business record too. Email receipt capture files each Old Navy shipping confirmation, the proof Old Navy asks for on online orders. A paper slip from the register goes into the Smartbills app with a photo, and staff purchases flow into expense reports without a shoebox.
