A hotel bill in Québec carries three taxes, and for an expense claim or a tax credit you need to be able to find all three.
The lodging tax
For a stay of under 32 consecutive nights at an establishment in a tourist region that has adopted it, you pay a lodging tax on top of GST and QST. It's generally 3.5% of the nightly price, or $3.50 per night when the unit is rented through an intermediary. It applies to the room price only: breakfast or parking included in a package is excluded from the base.
GST and QST on top
If the operator is registered, GST and QST are calculated on the total, lodging tax included. The lodging tax has to appear on the rental document, either separately or with a note that the price includes it.
The right document
The booking confirmation isn't the bill: the amount can change at check-in or check-out with parking, meals or extra charges. Ask for the itemized folio at check-out, which shows each night, each charge and each tax, with the hotel's GST and QST registration numbers. If you booked through an online travel agency, check who bills the stay: the hotel or the agency.
Filing a Québec hotel bill
When the folio comes by email, email receipt capture reads it with the lodging tax, GST and QST each on its own line, which is the breakdown a claim needs. A paper folio from the front desk can be photographed in the Smartbills app instead, and the stay joins the rest of the trip on the same expense report.
