How to pay a TxTag invoice after the move to HCTRA

TxTag invoices are now issued and paid through the Harris County Toll Road Authority. Since November 9, 2024, trips on TxDOT toll roads in the Austin and Houston regions are billed by HCTRA, and drivers without a tag receive an EZ Invoice. To pay one, open Pay Tolls & Invoices on hctra.org, enter the plate state and number, add the invoice number if you have it, and submit.
What changed for TxTag customers
TxDOT signed a toll services agreement with HCTRA in November 2024. Accounts that transferred became EZ TAG accounts managed at hctra.org instead of txtag.org, and existing TxTag stickers keep working on toll roads in Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas. TxDOT asked transferred customers to create a new online account at hctra.org to pay future bills and see their statements.
EZ Invoice lookup by plate
- Go to hctra.org and choose Pay Tolls & Invoices.
- Pick the state and type the license plate number.
- Add the invoice number if one is printed on your bill.
- Submit to see what is owed and pay.
HCTRA says a toll usually shows up 7 to 10 business days after the trip, and out-of-state plates can take up to 30 days to post. If you hold an EZ TAG account and still got invoices in the mail, log in to the account and pay them there, since unpaid invoices can get the account suspended.
One bill for two agencies, with one exception
Drivers without a tag get a single EZ Invoice covering both TxDOT and HCTRA toll roads in Austin and Houston, with only HCTRA's invoicing fees. Austin drivers still get separate bills for Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority roads. You can also pay at EZ TAG stores or at HCTRA retail partners such as Walmart and H-E-B.
Old TxTag balances and fake texts
TxDOT keeps collecting past-due bills from before the transition. To confirm whether you owe anything, call 281-875-3279. TxDOT also warns that TxTag and TxDOT do not send texts or emails about past-due tolls. Treat any such message as a scam and do not click its link.
Texas toll invoices kept on record
Between the transfer and two agencies on one road network, Texas toll paperwork scatters fast. Snap a mailed EZ Invoice with the receipt scanner, and once you have an HCTRA online account, our AI agent can sign in and collect each statement with bill fetching. Business trips then move onto an expense report with the toll lines attached.
