American Water

American Water bills live in MyWater, the company's customer portal. Sign in to pay, check your balance and turn on paperless billing, and you can view up to 36 months of past bills there. If you only need to pay, amwater.com/billpay takes a payment with your account number and no login.

Setting up MyWater

New users register at login.amwater.com/register with the account number printed on a bill. The same portal covers starting or stopping service, usage, alerts and payments. American Water links to a separate site for each of the 14 states on its list, from California and Hawaii to New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Payment locations are listed per state, and fee rules have changed over time. Read the page for your own state before paying.

Past bills and the paperless email

Paperless billing is free. Each month an email brings the amount due, the due date and a link to the bill itself. Inside MyWater the bill archive reaches back 36 months, a three-year window that covers most rental property or home office questions. Save each bill as it comes if your records need to reach further than that.

Paying and setting up Auto Pay

  • Online: in MyWater, or at amwater.com/billpay without registering. A $1.95 online transaction fee may apply.
  • Phone: 1-855-748-6066, any hour of the day, with your account number ready.
  • Mail: a check or money order with the payment stub, sent to the address on your bill. Leave out cash, staples and paper clips.
  • In person: the authorized payment locations listed on your state's American Water site.

Auto Pay is enrolled in MyWater and charges each monthly bill to a card or takes it from a checking or savings account. The bill still arrives every month with Auto Pay on, and that bill is the document to keep, because the bank line only shows a total.

Third-party notices, budget billing and due dates

Third-Party Notification sends copies of bills and past-due or shut-off notices to someone else who handles your bills, such as a relative or trustee. Budget Billing spreads seasonal spikes into predictable monthly amounts. Some customers can also pick a Preferred Due Date. All three are set up in MyWater.

American Water bills filed for you

Thirty-six months sounds like plenty until a lender or a tax preparer asks about year four. Connect your MyWater login and our AI agent signs in each month, downloads the new American Water bill and files it, through bill fetching. The paperless emails can also be picked up from your inbox with email receipt capture, and the bills are grouped by year for tax time.
