Markham and Vaughan: on the Alectra bill

Markham charges for water and sewer through Alectra Utilities, the local hydro company. Water and electricity appear together on the Alectra bill, every two months for residential accounts and monthly for commercial ones. Vaughan also refers residents to Alectra Utilities for water account questions. In both cities you view and pay the water charges through your Alectra account.

Owners and tenants

Vaughan warns that unpaid water bills may be added to the property tax account with extra fees. The City suggests owners stay the water account holder, or ask the tenant to add them as a guest on the account for online access. Markham also moves water arrears to the tax account and treats them much like taxes.

Richmond Hill: its own water bill

Richmond Hill bills water supply, wastewater and stormwater management on one City water bill, every three months for homes and every two months for commercial properties. Its water bill portal offers e-billing to view current and past bills. Pay through online banking with the account number on your bill, by card through Paymentus for a 2.25% fee, by cheque payable to City of Richmond Hill, at a bank, or in the 24-hour drop-off box.

Pre-authorized debit in Richmond Hill

Richmond Hill has two pre-authorized debit plans: equal monthly withdrawals on the first business day of each month, or one withdrawal on each bill's due date. The account must be in good standing to join, and you attach a void cheque or a bank withdrawal form. Credit cards can't be used for pre-authorized debit. The bill still comes on either plan and is the record to keep.
