City of Chicago

Chicago water and sewer charges come on the City of Chicago utility bill, which the Department of Finance handles. The city's utility billing web portal lets you view, print or download your bills, see payment history and usage, and enroll in paperless billing. The same portal takes quick payments, sets up payment plans and enrolls you in AutoPay.

What the utility bill covers

The city's payment site lists utility bills as water, sewer, garbage and the water-sewer tax. Those items share one bill and one account, and the Department of Finance's Utility Billing and Customer Service unit answers questions about it.

Bill lookup and downloads in the web portal

Sign in to the utility billing portal to open a bill, then print it or download a copy. Payment history and usage sit next to the bills, which helps when you need to match a payment to a period. Paperless billing is an option inside the same account.

Paying by phone, mail or in person

  • Phone: 312.744.4426, an automated line that takes electronic checks and cards.
  • Mail: check, cashier's check or money order to City of Chicago Utility Billing, P.O. Box 6330, Chicago, IL 60680-6330.
  • In person: City Hall at 121 N. LaSalle St., Room 107A, the Central Hearing Facility at 400 W. Superior, or a neighborhood payment center. These take cash, checks, money orders and cards.
  • EZ Pay Stations: automated kiosks for personal checks, cards or cash.

The city takes Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover. Debit cards need a Visa or Mastercard logo.

AutoPay and payment plans

AutoPay debits your bank account automatically with no service fee, and the city emails a reminder before each debit. That reminder is not the bill. Download the bill itself from the portal for your files. If you can't pay in full, set up a payment plan in the portal, through the phone line or at a payment center.

Chicago utility bills in one folder

An owner of a two-flat needs every water and sewer bill when the rental schedule is due. Connect the utility billing portal and our AI agent downloads each new bill with bill fetching. Paperless bill emails can arrive through email receipt capture, and the year's bills are ready for tax season.
