In Chile, electronic invoices pass through the SII, the tax authority, and every invoice issued to your RUT appears in your Registro de Compras y Ventas (RCV). The RCV is the purchase and sales register the SII builds from those documents, and it is where a business sees, accepts or claims the invoices it received.
Where to see received invoices
Sign in to sii.cl with your RUT and password, open the electronic invoicing services and choose the Registro de Compras y Ventas. Pick the period and open the purchases register: it lists each invoice received with the supplier, the folio, the date, the net amount and the VAT.
The 8-day window
For each invoice received, the business has 8 calendar days from its reception at the SII to give the acuse de recibo or to claim it. If it does neither, the acknowledgement is given automatically and the invoice is assigned to the period it falls in. A claimed invoice goes to the claimed section and cannot be accepted later, and an accepted one can no longer be claimed. Invoices received in the last 8 days of a month get their automatic acknowledgement in the following month, which decides when the VAT credit can be used.
Verifying a document
The SII's document verification service checks that an electronic document exists as issued, using the data printed on it, such as the issuer's RUT, the document type, the folio, the date and the amount.
Boletas
Electronic receipts (boletas) to consumers are reported to the SII too, but they do not name a buyer and never reach your RCV. For a business expense, ask for a factura at the till.
Keeping the receipts
Smartbills keeps the boletas and foreign invoices that never reach the RCV: photograph them in the app or forward the email, and each one is kept with its items, every tax and the total.
