How to get an Upwork invoice

Upwork creates invoices on both sides of a contract. Clients go to Reports, then Transaction history, where the Charges tab holds invoices and the Payments tab holds receipts. Freelancers go to Manage finances, then Transactions, and download the invoice behind each earning or service fee.
Invoices and receipts for clients
- Open Reports, then Transaction history.
- Switch to the Charges tab and click a charge to open its summary.
- Click the invoice icon beside a charge for that invoice alone, or Download PDF for the charge together with its linked payments.
The Payments tab, which opens by default, works the same way for receipts: click a row for the payment summary, or use the receipt icon in the table. Only company owners and admins with full or finance-only permissions can see either document.
Fee invoices for freelancers
In Manage finances, then Transactions, filter by date, transaction type or contract and select the transaction. Its summary shows earnings and fees, and the download icon in the invoice column produces the PDF. Upwork keeps freelancer invoices downloadable for five years from the invoice date, then deletes them for good. Freelancers do not have to approve anything, because billing to the client runs automatically.
Bulk downloads
After filtering, open the Select download dropdown and choose a CSV summary or a ZIP holding one PDF per transaction. Small requests reach your downloads folder in about 30 seconds. Larger ones can take two hours and arrive as an emailed link that works for 72 hours. For clients, a single CSV tops out at 1,000 transactions and a PDF batch at 2,000.
Tax details on the invoice
Client invoices and receipts show the company name, tax residence, owner's name and VAT number, plus the freelancer's verified name and invoicing address. Edit tax residence under Settings, then Tax information. On a multi-page PDF, the VAT details may only appear on a later page.
Upwork paperwork past the five-year cliff
Since Upwork erases invoices after five years, an outside copy matters if an audit reaches back that far. With bill fetching, our AI agent logs in to Upwork for you and saves each charge invoice and receipt as it posts. Freelancers can keep the year's service fee invoices with their tax receipts, and an employee who paid a one-off contract on a personal card can attach the receipt to an expense report.
