How to get a Substack invoice
Founder & CEO, Smartbills
2 min read
A paid Substack subscriber downloads an invoice from account settings. Go to Settings, scroll to Subscriptions and click the publication, select View next to Billing history, open the menu beside the payment and choose View invoice. A Stripe page opens; click Download invoice for the PDF. Writers do not get an invoice for Substack's cut; they export invoice data with fees instead.
Subscriber invoice, step by step
- Log in and open your account Settings.
- Under Subscriptions, click the publication.
- In the payment information section, select View next to Billing history.
- On the Payment & receipt history page, open the menu beside the subscription and select View invoice.
- In the Stripe tab, click Download invoice.
Company name and tax ID
On the subscription management page, find Payment Information and select Edit next to the payment method. Enter a billing email, a name or company name and a billing address, then pick a tax category such as European VAT or US EIN and enter the number. After you save, downloaded invoices carry those details. If the writer has enabled Stripe Tax, tax is collected when you choose the plan and appears as a line on the invoice.
What Substack charges writers
Publishing is free. With paid subscriptions on, Substack keeps 10% of each subscription payment, and Stripe charges card processing plus a Billing fee on recurring payments. Payouts arrive through your Stripe account, usually within 48 hours of each transaction. In Stripe, open Transactions, then Payouts, and click a payout for a ledger showing its fees.
Writer invoice export for taxes
In your publication's Settings, click Payments, then under Advanced select Request a new report. Choose a start and end date and click Request report. Substack emails you when the CSV is ready, and past exports stay at your publication's document exports page. The report breaks down fees, currency and plan type for each subscriber.
Substack subscriptions on the company card
Professionals often pay for industry newsletters on a card and need the invoice later. Our AI agent can sign in to Substack and download each Stripe invoice from Billing history through bill fetching, and the subscription goes on an expense report when an employee paid it. Writers can keep the invoice export with its fee breakdown in their tax receipts.
