Canadian tax and banking

When an employer or a company asks a TD Canada Trust customer for a void cheque, TD's own answer is its pre-filled Direct Deposit/Pre-Authorized Debit payment form. It is a PDF with your account details already on it, and TD says it can be used in place of a void cheque. Here is where to find it.

In the TD app

  1. Select the account you want the direct deposit information for.
  2. Select the Details tab.
  3. Select Direct Deposit Info.
  4. Select Download Form to get a filled PDF of your direct deposit information.

In EasyWeb

  1. Sign in to EasyWeb and, from the Accounts page, select the account the money should go into.
  2. Select the Manage tab.
  3. Select the Direct deposit form (PDF) link on the right side of the page.

TD notes that the PDF needs Adobe Reader, and that Safari users should turn off the pop-up blocker for the form to open.

What the form shows

The form fills in your account's five-digit transit (branch) number, TD's three-digit institution number, 004, and your seven-digit account number. Those are the three numbers any payer asks for: the transit number of your TD branch, TD's institution number and the account number itself. TD's EasyWeb tutorial adds that you can use it to set up direct deposit with the Canada Revenue Agency or your employer, and save or print it.

If you have TD cheques

TD says to write "void" across one in large letters and hand that over. You can also just give the numbers printed along the bottom of the cheque. The cheque number is not needed.

On a paper TD cheque, the same digits run along the bottom edge in a fixed order, and how to read a void cheque shows which group is which. When a form asks for a nine-digit routing number, bank routing numbers in Canada explains how TD's institution number and your transit number combine into one.

Collecting TD direct deposit forms from suppliers

A pre-filled TD form is still a PDF, and anyone handling the email can change the account number before it reaches you. In Smartbills vendor management, each supplier types its own banking details into its vendor record. Nobody retypes them from an attachment, and a new supplier whose banking details or tax number match an existing one is flagged as a likely duplicate. Accounts payable then pays from that record.
