Canadian tax and banking

CIBC puts the void cheque and the direct deposit form on one page in Online Banking, with an option to open them as a PDF you can download or print. The app shows the cheque from the account's information tab.

In CIBC Online Banking

  1. On the Online Banking homepage, select the account you need a void cheque for.
  2. On the Deposit Account Details page, open the Manage my account dropdown.
  3. Select Void cheque/direct deposit info.
  4. On the page that opens, which shows your direct deposit information, select Open PDF.

The PDF holds your void cheque and direct deposit information, ready to download or print.

In the CIBC Mobile Banking app

  1. Select the chevron arrow next to the account to open its details.
  2. Select the Account Info tab.
  3. Select View cheque to open the void cheque.

What the form shows

Both documents give the same three numbers: your branch's five-digit transit number, CIBC's three-digit institution number and your account number. CIBC's institution number is 010 in Payments Canada's directory of members.

If the layout of the numbers on the PDF is unfamiliar, how to read a void cheque labels each group in the order it's printed. A nine-digit routing number, which some forms ask for, combines CIBC's 010 with your transit number, and bank routing numbers in Canada shows how.

Supplier void cheques from CIBC accounts

Because the CIBC PDF can be downloaded and forwarded, it can also be edited before it reaches you, and a changed account number misdirects the next payment. In Smartbills vendor management, suppliers key in their own banking details on their vendor record. New vendors that match an existing one on banking details or tax number are flagged as likely duplicates, and payments go out through accounts payable from that record.
