Smartbills vs Sage

Sage stays your ledger whichever way this goes. Sage Expense Management, the product Sage bought with Fyle, is the only part that competes.

At a glance

Smartbills vs Sage, in one screen

Sage spans small-business accounting up to Sage Intacct, and since acquiring Fyle in July 2025 it also sells Sage Expense Management. So there are two halves here: the ledger Smartbills posts into, and the expense product that competes with us.

Smartbills

Best for

Sage customers who want receipts to arrive as structured data rather than as images somebody has to be chased for.

Where it's stronger

  • Receipts exist as data before anybody has been asked for anything.
  • Line-level detail, rather than whatever extraction managed to read off an image.
  • Capture, policy, cards and payables sit on one record.
  • You are not tied to a ledger vendor's roadmap or renewal date.

Sage

Best for

Organizations on Sage that place real value on buying the ledger and the expense product from one vendor.

Where it's stronger

  • Sage Intacct is a serious mid-market ledger and Smartbills does not replace it.
  • Fyle's real-time card feeds are genuinely ahead of ours.
  • One vendor and one contract is a real procurement advantage, and a bigger one than it sounds.
  • Expenses post to the ledger natively, with no third-party sync in between.

Every comparison on this site names what the other product does better. If we couldn't think of anything, we didn't publish the page.

These are structural differences, not plan checkboxes. Capabilities change, so check the vendor's own documentation before deciding on any single row.

Moving from Sage

None of this needs a big-bang cutover. Most teams run both tools for one cycle and compare capture rates before switching anyone off.

  1. Separate the two decisions

Keeping your Sage ledger and choosing an expense product are separate questions. Answer them one at a time.

  2. Connect the sync

Point Smartbills at Sage Intacct or whichever Sage ledger you run, and map categories once.

  3. Pilot one cost centre

Give one cost centre a cycle on each, then count how many receipts arrived without being requested.

  4. Weigh the bundle discount

Compare the single-vendor discount with the tax you can actually back up afterwards.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What people ask us before they sign up.

No. Sage stays your general ledger. The only overlap is with Sage Expense Management, the product that came from Fyle.

Confirm your exact Sage product and version with us first, because coverage differs across the Sage range.

Commercially it often is. Operationally it only works out if the bundled product is the one you would have chosen anyway.
