Smartbills vs Float

Float is a Canadian card and spend platform. Smartbills starts from the receipt instead of the card, and keeps what was bought and the tax on each line.

At a glance

Smartbills vs Float, in one screen

Float is a Toronto company offering Canadian businesses corporate cards in CAD and USD, business accounts, bill pay, reimbursements and spend management, with receipt capture and transaction coding built around the card.

Smartbills

Best for

Companies that need the purchase document itself, line by line with Canadian sales tax, whatever card or account paid.

Where it's stronger

  • Line items and Canadian sales tax from the receipt, not a card total.
  • Works with whatever cards and accounts you already have.
  • Receipts from the merchant and the mailbox. Less to chase.
  • Built in Montréal, in English and French, with data kept in Canada.

Float

Best for

Canadian companies that want a corporate card program, business accounts and bill pay from one Canadian provider.

Where it's stronger

  • A Canadian card program with CAD and USD cards, which Smartbills doesn't offer yet.
  • Business accounts, bill pay and FX from the same provider.
  • Cashback on card spend.
  • If what you need is a Canadian card program with controls, Float goes straight at it.

Moving from Float

None of this needs a big-bang cutover. Most teams run both tools for one cycle and compare capture rates before switching anyone off.

  1. Keep your cards

Smartbills reads card and bank feeds. A Float program can stay exactly as it is.

  2. Connect a mailbox and ledger

Emailed receipts come in on their own, and coded entries post to QuickBooks, Xero or NetSuite.

  3. Count receipts with detail

After a month, compare how many charges have an itemized receipt with the tax split out.

  4. Decide on cards separately

Where the card comes from and where the receipt comes from are separate decisions. Plenty of teams never change the first.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What people ask us before they sign up.

Not yet. Corporate cards are coming soon. Today Smartbills works with the cards and accounts you already have, Float included.

Yes. Smartbills matches card lines to their receipts and adds the line items and tax detail the card feed doesn't carry.

Both are Canadian. The difference is the source: Smartbills takes GST, HST and QST from each line of the receipt, which is the document a claim rests on.
