Saskatchewan PST and GST on business expenses

Saskatchewan business purchases can include both PST and GST. Smartbills keeps the taxes separate on each receipt, so only the GST is included in your input tax credit.

River Landing and the South Saskatchewan River in Saskatoon

Smartbills reads each tax from each receipt line, sending the GST to your claim and keeping the PST in the expense.

Saskatchewan PST and GST on separate lines

The GST at 5% and the PST at 6% stay as separate amounts on each receipt line, including on services and software that carry PST. The input tax credit is built from the GST alone, and the PST stays in the cost of what was bought.

  • GST and PST kept apart on every line
  • PST on software and services recorded as charged
  • Only the GST sent to the input tax credit

PST on services, booked to the cost

Saskatchewan's 6% PST reaches well beyond goods: repairs, contractor services and software subscriptions carry it too, and none of it comes back as a credit. Smartbills books each PST line to the expense it belongs to and claims only the 5% GST.

  • PST on services kept on its own line
  • Booked to the cost, never claimed
  • Only the GST claimed as an ITC

Why teams switch

The tax is on the receipt, not the card statement.

We claim 11% of every total because nobody has time to split it.

GST and PST come in as separate amounts from the receipt. Only the GST reaches the claim.

Our software subscriptions carry PST, and it's buried in the card total.

The receipt or invoice from the vendor is pulled from the mailbox with the PST on its own line.

Receipts from the field come back crumpled, if they come back at all.

Receipts come from the merchant and the mailbox as purchases happen, matched to the card line.

Before and after

What changes on a Saskatchewan receipt.

11% of the total is quick, and it claims PST that was never recoverable. The receipt already splits the two.

The federal GST at 5% and the provincial PST at 6%, for 11% combined on most taxable goods. PST also applies to many services, including most software and cloud services.

No. PST has no input tax credit. It's part of the cost of the purchase. Only the GST is claimed back, which is why the two need to stay apart.

In most cases, yes. Saskatchewan taxes software and cloud services. A subscription bought with a company card usually carries PST. Smartbills pulls the vendor's emailed receipt so the PST is recorded where it was charged.

6%, charged on top of the 5% GST on most goods and many services. Saskatchewan PST can't be claimed back as an input tax credit.

Many services carry it, including repairs and contractor services, and software subscriptions are taxable too. Check the receipt: Smartbills keeps the PST line as the supplier charged it.
