Prince Edward Island

PEI HST on business expenses, at 15%

Keep the HST and supplier details with every Prince Edward Island business receipt. Smartbills gives your team the record behind each input tax credit, including travel expenses.

The beach and red cliffs of Panmure Island

Smartbills reads the rate on every receipt, 15% on the Island or 14% in Nova Scotia, instead of assuming one.

PEI HST read from the receipt, line by line

Some lines on a P.E.I. receipt carry 15%, some carry only the 5% federal part, and some carry nothing at all. Smartbills keeps the tax each line was actually charged, with the supplier's HST number. The input tax credit matches the receipt instead of a rate applied to the total.

  • Tax kept per line, as the merchant charged it
  • Books and other rebated items counted at 5%
  • Supplier HST number kept with the receipt

Off-Island trips at the neighbours' rates

Cross the bridge or take the ferry and the rate changes: New Brunswick's HST is 15% like PEI's, Nova Scotia's is 14% since April 1, 2025. Smartbills reads the rate each receipt charged, and a trip report adds up with both on it.

  • Each province's rate read from the receipt
  • Nova Scotia at 14%, New Brunswick at 15%
  • One report for the whole trip

Why teams switch

The tax is on the receipt, not the card statement.

We claim HST as 15% of every total, and we know that's not what the receipts say.

The tax comes from each line of the receipt. Rebated, zero-rated and exempt items are counted as they were charged.

Once a purchase is over $100, the CRA wants the supplier's HST number, and it's never on the card statement.

The registration number comes with the receipt when the merchant prints it. The documentation is on file before anyone asks.

Our team is off-Island every week, and nobody checks which rate each receipt used.

Each receipt keeps its own province's rate, and the trip report adds up with all of them.

Before and after

What changes on a P.E.I. receipt.

On a P.E.I. receipt, some lines carry 15% HST and some carry none. The total can't tell you which.
