Alberta GST on business expenses, and nothing else

Alberta has no provincial sales tax, but travel and hotel receipts can still need careful review. Smartbills keeps GST, tourism levies and out-of-province tax with the expense.

Smartbills takes each tax from each receipt line, claiming the GST and HST you're owed and leaving levies and PST in the expense.

The GST, and only the GST, in your claim

An Alberta receipt carries 5% GST and nothing else, until it doesn't. Smartbills reads the tax from each line. A tourism levy, B.C. PST or Saskatchewan PST stays in the expense, and HST paid in another province is claimed in full with the GST.

  • GST kept per line, with the supplier's GST number
  • Tourism levy recorded as part of the room cost
  • Out-of-province PST expensed, HST claimed

The tourism levy stays out of the GST claim

A hotel bill in Alberta can carry the tourism levy as well as the GST: 6% of the room price since April 1, 2026, up from 4%. The levy is a cost, not a tax you claim back. Smartbills keeps it on its own line so the input tax credit covers the GST alone.

  • Tourism levy booked to the cost of the stay
  • Stays booked before April 1, 2026 at 4%
  • GST on every line, nothing else claimed

Why teams switch

The tax is on the receipt, not the card statement.

We assume everything is 5% GST, then a Vancouver trip comes back with PST we can't claim.

Each tax is kept on its own line. Out-of-province PST is expensed and only the GST or HST goes to the claim.

Hotel bills in Banff and Canmore carry a levy on top of the GST.

The tourism levy is recorded as part of the room cost, not mixed into the input tax credit.

Our receipts are photos in a group chat until the end of the quarter.

Receipts come from the merchant and the mailbox as purchases happen, matched to the card line.

Before and after

What changes on an Alberta receipt.

Alberta has no provincial sales tax, which makes 5% of the total an easy habit. These are the receipts where that habit goes wrong.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What people ask us before they sign up.

Only the federal GST at 5%. Alberta has no provincial sales tax. Registered businesses claim the GST back as an input tax credit on their return to the CRA.

No. The tourism levy is not a sales tax with an input tax credit. It's part of what the room costs. Since April 1, 2026 the levy is 6% of the price of accommodation in hotels and short-term rentals.

HST paid in Ontario or the Atlantic provinces is claimed as an input tax credit, like GST. PST paid in B.C., Saskatchewan or Manitoba and QST paid in Quebec, if you're not registered for it, are not, and belong in the expense. Smartbills keeps each on its own line so the difference is made automatically.

No. Alberta has no provincial sales tax, and most purchases carry only the 5% GST. Hotel stays also carry the tourism levy, 6% of the accommodation price since April 1, 2026.

No. The levy isn't GST or HST and can't be claimed as an input tax credit. It's part of the cost of the room.
