AI agent receipts for every agentic payment

When an AI agent buys for you or your company, Smartbills keeps the merchant's itemized receipt with the instruction the agent followed, the person who authorized it and the card it paid with.

Smartbills brings in the receipt for each agent purchase by email, API or MCP, with the agent's instruction, limits and card attached.

Who authorized it, kept on the receipt

An agent buys within an instruction someone gave it: a limit, a category, an end date. Smartbills keeps that instruction, and the name of the person who set it, on the receipt of every purchase made under it. When an auditor asks who approved a charge, the receipt answers.

  • The instruction and limits the agent bought within
  • The person who set them, and when
  • Kept with every receipt made under them

The full bill, not a total

A chat confirmation tells you what an order cost. The merchant's receipt tells you what was bought: each item and quantity, the subtotal, every tax, any tip or fees, and the total. Smartbills reads all of it, and each line can be coded to its own account, taxes included.

  • Line items with quantities and prices
  • Each tax on its own line, ready to recover
  • Delivery, fees and tip kept apart

Matched to the card the agent paid with

When each agent pays with its own card, every charge traces back to one agent and one purpose. Smartbills matches the card transaction to its receipt by amount, date and merchant, the way it matches your team's card spend, and records which agent held the card.

With the person it was for, and in the books

The receipt lands in the expenses of the person the agent was working for, and finance sees the same record. It syncs to QuickBooks, Xero or Sage with its lines and taxes, like any other Smartbills expense.

How AI agent receipts works

  1. Set the limits

Give the agent its instruction: what it may buy, how much and until when. You stay the person on record.

  2. The agent buys

It orders from the merchant and pays with its card. The merchant charges the order and issues the receipt.

  3. The receipt arrives

By email to a connected mailbox, through the Receipts API, or attached by an assistant over MCP. Smartbills reads every line.

  4. Matched and filed

The receipt meets its card transaction, is coded and syncs to your books, with the instruction behind it attached.

Frequently asked questions

What people ask us before they sign up.

The receipt or invoice for a purchase an AI agent made for a person or a business. Like any receipt, it lists the merchant, the items, each tax, any tip or fees, and the total. For an agent purchase it should also record who authorized the agent, the limits it bought within and the card it paid with.

Payments an AI agent makes for a person or a company. The agent picks the items and pays through a checkout protocol with a tokenized card, within limits the person set. Our guide to agentic payments covers the programs from OpenAI and Stripe, Visa, Mastercard and Google.

The merchant that sold the item. OpenAI's documentation, for example, says OpenAI is not the merchant of record under the Agentic Commerce Protocol: the merchant charges the payment and handles the order. The confirmation an assistant shows in a chat is a message, not the merchant's receipt.

Like any other receipt. Email receipt capture finds them in Gmail, Outlook, Zoho Mail or IMAP mailboxes, the Receipts API takes them from your own platform, and an assistant connected to the Smartbills MCP server can attach a receipt from a link once you confirm. Expense Management matches each one to its card transaction, and the receipt keeps the agent's details: the instruction, the limits, the person who set them and the agent's card.

Yes, through the Receipts API. One request carries the merchant, the order number, line items, each tax, fees, tip and the payments.

No. Smartbills keeps the record and does not move money for agents. The Smartbills MCP server has no payment or bank connection tools, and an assistant cannot pay through it even if asked.

Receipts from any agent reach Smartbills through email capture, the Receipts API or the MCP server, whichever agent or checkout protocol placed the order.
