Head to head
Venn vs Float
Venn and Float are both Canadian spend platforms with CAD and USD cards, interest-earning accounts, bill payments and accounting sync. Venn leans toward a multi-currency business account priced by plan. Float leans toward corporate cards and expense management for teams, priced per user.

The differences that decide it
Account first or card first
Venn is a business account first: four currencies, interest on CAD and USD, free Interac e-Transfers and FX that gets cheaper on higher plans. Float is a card and expense program first: credit up to $3M on eligibility, receipt collection, reimbursements and approvals.
Flat plans versus per user
Venn charges a flat monthly fee per plan with user limits. Float's paid plan is priced per user, or by active users. A small team often pays less on Venn; a larger team with few active cardholders can come out ahead on Float.
Expense management depth
Float puts reimbursements with mileage on its free plan and multi-level approvals on Professional. Venn adds automated receipt collection on Plus and multi-step approvals on Pro, and lists reimbursements on its Custom plan.
Québec
Venn says it's currently not available to businesses in Québec. Float serves Canadian businesses, Québec included, which settles it for a company based there.
How to choose
If foreign exchange is the main cost
Venn's account holds CAD, USD, GBP and EUR, and its FX rate drops from 0.45% on Essentials to 0.25% on Pro. Float's FX is 0.25% on Essentials. For a company that mostly pays US suppliers, compare the FX fee on your monthly volume first; it usually outweighs the subscription.
If the problem is employee spending
Float is built around corporate cards for a team: physical and virtual cards, receipt collection and matching in the mobile app, reimbursements with mileage and approval policies. Venn has cards and receipt collection too, but its user limits (3, 10 and 20) and its reimbursements on Custom point to smaller teams.
Cashback, read carefully
Both advertise 1% cashback, with conditions. Venn caps the monthly spend that earns it on Essentials and Plus. Float pays up to 1%, and the full rate needs more than $25,000 of monthly spend per card program. At low volumes, neither cashback should decide the choice.
Growing past the free plan
Venn Plus, at $40 a month, raises the limits to 10 users and 50 virtual cards, makes EFT and ACH free and adds automated receipt collection and accounting rules. Pro, at $100, removes the card and cashback limits, drops FX to 0.25% and adds multi-step approvals, spend policies and custom roles.
Float Professional, at $10 per user a month, adds unlimited physical cards, multi-level approvals, customizable policies, CAD and USD reimbursements and NetSuite, with a 90-day free trial. For a team of 10, Venn Plus costs $40 a month and Float Professional $100.
Invoicing your customers
Venn includes invoicing on every plan, with pre-authorized debit at 1% (capped at $5) and card payments at 2.9% + $0.20, and invoice customization from Plus. Float's pricing page centers on cards, bill payments and reimbursements rather than invoicing.
Where Smartbills fits
Smartbills isn't a card or an account. It's the receipt side: itemized receipts sent through Smartbills, receipts found in email and photos read down to each tax line, matched to the card purchase on Venn, Float or any other card, with GST, HST and QST split out for your input tax credits. We've written our own comparison against each.
