Smartbills vs Brex

Both get called spend management, but they solve different halves of it: Brex controls the card, and Smartbills shows what the card actually bought, line by line.

At a glance

Smartbills vs Brex, in one screen

Brex sells corporate cards, expense management, bill pay and business banking, first to venture-backed startups and now more and more to enterprise. As with Ramp, the card sits at the centre of the product and the business model, and the banking relationship is part of the pitch.

Smartbills

Best for

Businesses that need the purchase document itself, itemized and defensible in a tax review, more than a card statement with a policy layer on top.

Where it's stronger

  • Itemized evidence, which is what a tax authority asks for and what a card statement can't give you.
  • Canadian, UK and European tax rules sit in the core product from day one.
  • Bilingual throughout, down to the receipt itself.
  • Capture works across payment methods, including cards we didn't issue.

Brex

Best for

Choose Brex if you're a venture-backed or enterprise US company that wants cards, banking, treasury and spend controls from one vendor.

Where it's stronger

  • Banking, cards, expenses and bill pay from one vendor, which really is simpler to administer.
  • A strong fit for venture-backed US companies, including treasury features we don't offer.
  • A larger organization and a longer track record at enterprise scale.
  • Well-developed travel booking and enterprise controls.

Moving from Brex

None of this needs a big-bang cutover. Most teams run both tools for one cycle and compare capture rates before switching anyone off.

  1. Start with capture alone

Connect your card feeds and ledger, and leave cards and banking where they are. Your treasury setup doesn't move.

  2. Count receipts with detail

Count transactions with an itemized receipt attached. Approved expense reports tell you much less.

  3. Map your accounts once

Map categories to your accounting system one time, and the coding rules apply to every receipt after.

  4. Move only what's worth it

Card issuing is a separate decision you may never need to make. Plenty of teams keep Brex cards and change only where receipts come from.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What people ask us before they sign up.

No. Smartbills isn't a bank and doesn't plan to become one. If one vendor for banking and cards is what you need, that's a good reason to choose Brex.

Yes. Smartbills reads the Brex card feed and attaches itemized receipts to it. Running capture on top of an existing Brex program is supported, and it's a common setup.

Smartbills, because that's where we've put our focus. GST, HST, QST and the CRA's documentation thresholds are handled directly, in both official languages, while Brex was built for the US first.
