Head to head
Ramp vs Expensify
Ramp starts from a corporate card and builds expense management around it. Expensify starts from the expense report and the receipt, and offers a card on top. That starting point shapes how each is priced, who it's free for, and what a team's month-end looks like.
Who each one is for
Choose Ramp if
You want company cards, bill pay and travel on one free platform, with receipts matched to the card when it's swiped.
Choose Expensify if
Your employees mostly spend on their own cards and submit expenses for reimbursement, or you want a free receipt scanner for individuals.

The differences that decide it
Card first versus report first
Ramp assumes spending happens on its card. The receipt is captured when the card is swiped, and the policy is checked before the purchase. Expensify assumes an employee has a receipt and needs to be paid back or to file it, and its card plugs into that report flow.
Who pays and how
Ramp's core platform is free for the company, and Plus adds a per-user price and a platform fee. Expensify is free for individuals, and companies pay per member: $5 on Collect, from $9 per active member on Control, with discounts for annual commitments and Expensify Card use.
Controls before or after
Ramp enforces policy at the card, flagging or blocking out-of-policy transactions in real time. Expensify enforces it on the report, through approvals and custom rules. If overspending is the problem, controls at the card stop it sooner.
Travel and bills
Both book travel and handle supplier bills. Expensify adds rail and trip approvals; Ramp pays bills by ACH, card, check and wire on its free plan.
How to choose
Look at how your team spends today
If most spending already goes on company cards, Ramp's model fits: issue a card per employee or per vendor, set limits, and let receipts match themselves. If employees pay on personal cards and claim the money back, Expensify's report flow is closer to how you work, and it reimburses by ACH on Collect.
Price a 20-person team
On Ramp Free, the software costs nothing. On Ramp Plus it's $15 per user a month plus a platform fee that Ramp doesn't publish. On Expensify Collect, 20 members cost $100 a month. Control is custom, from $9 per active member. Rewards and annual discounts change the net cost on both. Ask each for a quote on your real headcount.
Receipts are still the work
Both read receipts from photos or match them to card data, and Expensify's SmartScan is unlimited on every plan. Neither gets the itemized receipt from the store, which is what a finance team needs to split personal items, recover GST or VAT, or answer an auditor.
Travel
Ramp books flights, hotels and cars on its free plan with 24/7 chat support, and Plus adds 24/7 phone support. Expensify books flights, hotels, cars and rail on Collect, with travel rules, unlimited group policies, trip approvals tied to expense rules, a 24/7 travel support line and travel reporting.
What the card rewards are worth
The Expensify Card pays 1% cash back on US purchases with no minimum, and 2% on monthly spend over $250K. Expensify also says card use can cut its subscription by up to half. Ramp doesn't list card rewards on its pricing page; its argument is savings through controls. At low spend, rewards rarely change the decision.
Where Smartbills fits
Smartbills isn't a card program or a payables system. It's the receipt side: itemized receipts sent through Smartbills, receipts found in your team's email, bills fetched from supplier portals and photos read down to each tax line, matched to the purchase whichever card you use. Some teams run it next to Ramp or Expensify to close the receipt gap; others use it with the cards they already have. We've written our own comparison against each.

Compare on your own data, not ours.
Connect a card feed and your ledger, run it for a month and count the transactions that ended up with an itemized document attached. That number is the comparison that matters.
