Head to head
Ramp vs BILL (Bill.com)
BILL started as accounts payable and receivable software and added cards through Divvy. Ramp started with a corporate card and added bill pay. Both now cover cards and supplier bills, but they price them the opposite way: BILL charges per user for AP and AR and gives Spend & Expense away, while Ramp includes bill pay on its free plan and charges for advanced features on Plus.
Who each one is for
Choose Ramp if
You want bill pay and cards on one free platform, with approvals, batch payments and multi-entity on Plus when you need them.
Choose BILL if
AP and AR are the center of your finance work, you want invoicing and collections in the same tool, and your vendors already pay or get paid through BILL.

The differences that decide it
Who pays for bill pay
BILL charges per user for AP and AR, from $49 to $89 a month, and per-payment fees on top. Ramp includes bill pay on its free plan and charges for batch payments, approvals and advanced integrations on Plus. For a team with several AP users, the gap is large.
Receivables
Every BILL AP & AR plan includes invoicing, reminders and customer payments. Ramp AR is newer and, per Ramp, limited to eligible US single-entity businesses on QuickBooks Online or NetSuite.
Procurement and controls
BILL Corporate includes purchase orders, tolerance rules and 2-way matching, single sign-on and cash flow forecasting for QuickBooks Online users, and Enterprise adds dual control. On Ramp, procurement is an add-on on Plus and Enterprise.
How sync works
BILL's lower plans sync QuickBooks and Xero by CSV on Essentials and automatically from Team. Ramp syncs QuickBooks Online and Xero on Free and says its ERP sync runs in real time. Check how each fits your close process.
How to choose
Price your real AP team
Count the people who enter, approve and pay bills. On BILL Team, three AP users cost $195 a month before payment fees; on Corporate, with multi-entity and custom approvals, $267. On Ramp, bill pay is free, and Plus adds $15 per user plus a platform fee for approvals, batch payments and NetSuite. Add payment fees on BILL: $0.59 per ACH payment and $1.99 per check.
If you invoice customers too
BILL's AP & AR plans include receivables on every tier, which suits a business that wants payables and collections in one place. Ramp AR is new and narrower in eligibility. If AR matters, check that your business qualifies before counting on Ramp for it.
Cards alongside bills
Both now give cards away. BILL Spend & Expense is $0 with a credit line subject to approval; Ramp's card is the core of its free plan. The difference is whether you'd pay for the bill pay that sits next to the card. Receipts behind card purchases still need capturing on both.
Paying international vendors
BILL sends international FX wires and local transfers free, with the exchange rate applied, and charges $19.99 for a USD wire abroad. Ramp lets you pay global vendors in USD or local currency, and its Enterprise plan adds local-currency card issuing in 30+ countries.
Approvals and coding
BILL uses standard approval policies on Essentials and Team, custom policies on Corporate and dual control on Enterprise, and adds AI multi-line bill coding from Team. Ramp puts payment release approvals and batch payments on Plus, and says its agents handle coding, approval routing and fraud checks.
Where Smartbills fits
Smartbills isn't a payables system. It's how documents arrive: bills fetched from supplier portals and utility accounts, receipts found in your team's email, itemized receipts sent through Smartbills and photos read down to each tax line, coded and posted to your books. Teams use it in front of Ramp or BILL so the invoice is already there when it's time to pay. We've written our own comparison against each.
