Head to head

Everlance vs MileIQ

Everlance and MileIQ both log your drives automatically with your phone's GPS and turn them into IRS-compliant mileage reports. MileIQ stops there and does it simply. Everlance adds expenses, receipts and, on its top plan, tax filing, and runs mileage reimbursement programs for companies.

The differences that decide it

One job or several

MileIQ does one thing: it records every drive in the background, and you swipe each one into business or personal. Everlance tracks drives the same way and then goes on to expenses, receipts and deductions. If mileage is the only thing you log, MileIQ's narrower app is less to learn.

How far the free plan goes

MileIQ's free plan covers 40 drives a month and Everlance's covers 30 automatic trips, plus unlimited trips you start and stop yourself. A driver with two business stops a day goes past either limit within the month.

Expenses and tax

Everlance's paid plans add receipt uploads, expenses pulled from linked bank and card accounts and, on Professional, a deduction finder, tax filing and audit defense. MileIQ leaves expenses and filing to other tools and gives you reports to hand over.

When the company pays

Everlance runs reimbursement programs for employers: FAVR, cents-per-mile and monthly allowances. MileIQ's App Store listing is written for individual drivers.

How to choose

Count your drives

Look at a typical month. If you make fewer than 30 business drives, either free plan may cover you. Past 40, you're paying for one or the other.

Then ask whether mileage is all you track. If you also keep receipts for fuel, parking, meals and supplies, Everlance's paid plans cover them in the same app. With MileIQ, you'll want a separate receipt app.

If tax time is the reason

Both produce IRS-compliant mileage logs, which is what a deduction needs. Everlance Professional goes further with a deduction finder and filing included. If you already work with an accountant, MileIQ's reports may be all they need from you.

If you drive in Canada

Both are built around IRS reporting. Everlance lists a Canadian support line on its site. Check that each app's reports match the CRA's logbook requirements before you rely on them for a Canadian claim.

Where Smartbills fits

Smartbills doesn't detect drives. You enter the trip and the vehicle, and it calculates the distance from the route and the amount at your rate, including Canadian rates such as the CRA's tiered rate. Its strength is the receipts around the drive: fuel, parking, tolls and meals, read down to each item and tax, on the same expense report as your trips and synced to QuickBooks, Xero, Sage Intacct, FreshBooks or NetSuite. Some people log drives in MileIQ or Everlance and keep the receipts in Smartbills. We've written our own comparison against each.

Compare on your own data, not ours.

Connect a card feed and your ledger, run it for a month and count the transactions that ended up with an itemized document attached. That number is the comparison that matters.
