Smartbills reads each receipt line and keeps New Brunswick's HST apart from the GST and QST of purchases made in Quebec.
New Brunswick HST read from the receipt, line by line
Some lines on a New Brunswick receipt carry 15%, some carry only the 5% federal part, and some carry nothing at all. Smartbills keeps the tax each line was actually charged, with the supplier's HST number. The input tax credit matches the receipt instead of a rate applied to the total.
- Tax kept per line, as the merchant charged it
- Books and other rebated items counted at 5%
- Supplier HST number kept with the receipt
Purchases across the Quebec border
A purchase in Quebec carries GST and QST instead of HST. The GST comes back as an input tax credit. The QST only comes back if your business is registered for it with Revenu Québec; otherwise it stays in the cost. Smartbills keeps the two apart on every Quebec receipt.
- GST and QST read separately
- QST expensed when you aren't registered for it
- HST and GST claimed as ITCs
Why teams switch
The tax is on the receipt, not the card statement.
We claim HST as 15% of every total, and we know that's not what the receipts say.
The tax comes from each line of the receipt. Rebated, zero-rated and exempt items are counted as they were charged.
Once a purchase is over $100, the CRA wants the supplier's HST number, and it's never on the card statement.
The registration number comes with the receipt when the merchant prints it. The documentation is on file before anyone asks.
Half our suppliers are across the Quebec border, and their QST ends up in our claim.
GST and QST are read separately, and the QST is expensed unless you're registered for it.
Before and after
What changes on a New Brunswick receipt.
15% of the total treats every line as taxed. These purchases show where that overstates the credit.
| Capability | Card statement and photos | With Smartbills |
|---|---|---|
| HST on the purchase | 15% of the total | The tax each line was charged |
| Rebated and zero-rated items | Taxed at 15% anyway | Counted as charged |
| Supplier HST number | Only if someone kept the paper | Kept with the receipt |
| Getting receipts in | Photos at month end | From the merchant or the mailbox |
