Smartbills vs Ramp

Ramp's card feed shows where the money went. Smartbills adds what was bought, because stores that use Smartbills send the itemized receipt along with the transaction.

At a glance

Smartbills vs Ramp, in one screen

Ramp is a corporate card and spend management platform, and the card is where both the product and the business model start. Interchange pays for the software and the rebate, and the rest is built outward from the card: issuing it, setting controls on it and reconciling what it captures.

Smartbills

Best for

Businesses whose spend problem is paperwork more than behavior: missing receipts, missing line detail and tax they can't recover without evidence.

Where it's stronger

  • Capture isn't tied to a card. It covers spend a card program never sees.
  • Line-level data backs VAT and GST claims that a card feed can't support on its own.
  • Bilingual, multi-jurisdiction tax handling that was there from the start.
  • The receipt network also serves the merchant side of the business.

Ramp

Best for

Choose Ramp if you're consolidating US card spend onto one program and the rebate, the controls and the card itself are where you see the value.

Where it's stronger

  • An excellent card product, with strong controls and a well-regarded rebate.
  • Deep US bank and payroll integrations, plus procurement and travel on the same platform.
  • A much larger engineering and support organization.
  • If your problem is consolidating card spend more than recovering documents, Ramp goes straight at it.

Moving from Ramp

None of this needs a big-bang cutover. Most teams run both tools for one cycle and compare capture rates before switching anyone off.

  1. Keep the cards you like

Smartbills captures receipts on any card feed. Test the evidence without reissuing a single Ramp card.

  2. Connect your ledger

Map categories once against the ledger you already use, and coded receipts post there from then on.

  3. Measure your capture rate

Compare the share of transactions with an itemized receipt, before and after. That number settles it either way.

  4. Decide on cards separately

Move card issuing only if the math on rebates and controls favours it. Capture works the same either way.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What people ask us before they sign up.

Either. Smartbills reads card and bank feeds and matches receipts to them. It can run on top of an existing Ramp program or replace it if you'd rather consolidate. You never have to move your cards first.

No. Smartbills issues corporate and virtual cards, but the business isn't funded by interchange, which is why capture works the same whether or not the spend went on our card.

For card controls and rebates inside the United States, Ramp goes deeper than we do. For line-level detail, tax recovery and receipts across several countries, the comparison runs the other way.

Ramp is funded by interchange and Smartbills isn't. A like-for-like number depends on your card volume. Compare the plan you'd actually buy against the rebate you'd realistically earn.
