Smartbills vs AvidXchange

AvidXchange pays your suppliers, and it pays them well. Smartbills handles the spend that never produced a supplier invoice in the first place.

At a glance

Smartbills vs AvidXchange, in one screen

AvidXchange automates payables for middle-market companies and pays suppliers by ACH, cheque or virtual card across the AvidPay network it spent decades building. Its ERP coverage is unusually deep in real estate and construction: Yardi, MRI, Rent Manager and TimberScan. Privately held since October 2025 under TPG with a Corpay minority stake, it recently added an employee spend app.

Smartbills

Best for

Teams whose expensive problem is the receipt behind card spend rather than the supplier payment itself.

Where it's stronger

  • Covers the spend with no supplier invoice: cards, store receipts and reimbursements.
  • Receipts come in as structured data. There is no document to read.
  • Cards, expenses and receipts are one system rather than a recent addition.
  • Built in Canada, where AvidPay and the vertical integrations are weakest.

AvidXchange

Best for

Companies on Yardi, MRI or Rent Manager whose suppliers are already enrolled on AvidPay.

Where it's stronger

  • The AvidPay supplier network is a moat no new entrant replicates quickly.
  • Vertical ERP depth in Yardi, MRI, Rent Manager and TimberScan.
  • Twenty-five years in the middle market, and named a leader by IDC MarketScape.
  • Suppliers already enrolled on AvidPay are a strong reason to stay.

Moving from AvidXchange

None of this needs a big-bang cutover. Most teams run both tools for one cycle and compare capture rates before switching anyone off.

  1. Check your AvidPay enrolment

If your invoices settle to suppliers already enrolled on AvidPay, we're not the alternative.

  2. Split invoices from card spend

Measure what arrives as an invoice and what arrives as a receipt before pricing anything.

  3. Connect your ledger

Connect the ledger AvidXchange posts to and map categories and tax codes once.

  4. Test card spend for a cycle

Give one cycle to the card and receipt spending they've only recently started to cover.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What people ask us before they sign up.

Part-owned, not owned. TPG took a majority interest in October 2025 and Corpay holds roughly a third. They remain separate companies.

Yes. The AvidXchange Spend app, a recent addition, captures receipts and handles reimbursements and card controls.

AvidPay is a domestic US rail and cross-border was added later. If you are Canadian, confirm coverage with them before you commit.
