Head to head
Sage Accounting vs QuickBooks Online
Sage Accounting and QuickBooks Online are both cloud accounting systems sold to Canadian small businesses, with invoicing, bank reconciliation and GST/HST. Sage counts users differently, prices lower and works in English and French on every plan. QuickBooks bundles more into its middle plan and sells payroll as an add-on from the same vendor.
Who each one is for
Choose Sage Accounting if
You want unlimited users at a lower monthly price, a bilingual interface on every plan, and accounting without a large bundle of extras.
Choose QuickBooks Online if
You want projects, budgeting and class tracking in one plan, payroll from the same vendor, and your accountant already works in QuickBooks.

The differences that decide it
Users and price
Sage Standard, at $50 a month, has unlimited users, bills, receipt capture and a cash flow forecast. The QuickBooks plan with bills and several users is Plus, at $110 a month for up to five. For a business with a few people in the books, Sage usually costs less.
French on every plan
Sage puts a bilingual interface and support in English and French on every plan, which matters for a Québec business or a team that works in both languages. QuickBooks Online is also available in French in Canada.
What QuickBooks bundles
QuickBooks Plus includes projects, budgeting, class and location tracking, inventory and multi-currency together. Sage keeps multi-currency and inventory for Plus and doesn't list projects or class tracking on its Canadian pricing page.
Payroll and the ecosystem
QuickBooks sells payroll as an add-on inside the same subscription. Sage sells payroll as a separate product.
How to choose
Compare the middle plans
Most businesses that pay suppliers end up on the middle plan. That's Sage Standard at $50 a month with unlimited users, against QuickBooks Plus at $110 a month for up to five.
If you also need inventory or multi-currency, compare Sage Plus at $72 with the same QuickBooks Plus. If you need projects, budgeting or class tracking, QuickBooks Plus has them and Sage's Canadian pricing page doesn't list them.
Introductory offers
Sage advertised 75% off for six months when we checked, and QuickBooks 90% off for six months. Both renew at the regular price. Budget on that.
Receipts and expenses
Sage automates receipt capture on Standard and Plus; QuickBooks includes receipt capture from EasyStart. Both read a photo of the receipt. Neither gets the itemized receipt from the store, which is where line-level GST, HST and QST come from.
Switching
Switch at year-end with your accountant. Bring customers, suppliers, open invoices and opening balances across, and keep the old file available for the CRA's six-year retention period.
Working in French, and in Québec
Sage puts a bilingual interface and support in English and French on every Canadian plan. QuickBooks runs a French Canadian site and offers QuickBooks Online in French.
Sage's pricing page describes calculating GST/HST to submit to the CRA. A Québec business also files QST with Revenu Québec. Ask either vendor to show you the QST return before you switch.
Inventory and multiple currencies
Sage Plus, at $72 a month, adds invoicing and banking in multiple currencies and inventory. QuickBooks Plus, at $110, includes both together with projects, budgeting and class tracking. If you only need inventory or US dollar invoicing, Sage Plus usually costs less.
Paying suppliers
Sage manages purchase invoices from Standard, at $50 a month, alongside unlimited users, quotes and a cash flow forecast. QuickBooks adds bills at Plus, at $110 a month; Lite and EasyStart don't include them. If entering and paying supplier bills is a weekly job, the price of the plan that includes bills is the number to compare.
Where Smartbills fits
Smartbills isn't accounting software. It's the receipt and expense layer: itemized receipts sent through Smartbills, receipts found in email, bills fetched from supplier portals and photos read down to each tax line, with GST, HST and QST split out and posted to your books. It works in English and French. We've written our own comparison against each.

Connect a card feed and your ledger, run it for a month and count the transactions that ended up with an itemized document attached. That number is the comparison that matters.
