Smartbills takes the HST from each receipt line, at 14% or the old 15%, with zero-rated and federal-only items kept apart.
Nova Scotia HST read from the receipt, line by line
Some lines on a Nova Scotia receipt carry 14%, some carry only the 5% federal part, and some carry nothing at all. Smartbills keeps the tax each line was actually charged, with the supplier's HST number. The input tax credit matches the receipt instead of a rate applied to the total.
- Tax kept per line, as the merchant charged it
- Books and other rebated items counted at 5%
- Supplier HST number kept with the receipt
Two HST rates in the same year
Nova Scotia's HST went from 15% to 14% on April 1, 2025. A claim that reaches back past that date mixes both rates. Smartbills reads the rate each receipt actually charged, and the total adds up whichever side of the change a purchase falls on.
- The rate read from each receipt
- 15% before April 1, 2025, 14% after
- Each supplier's HST number kept
Por qué cambian los equipos
El impuesto está en el recibo, no en el estado de cuenta.
We claim HST as 14% of every total, and we know that's not what the receipts say.
The tax comes from each line of the receipt. Rebated, zero-rated and exempt items are counted as they were charged.
Once a purchase is over $100, the CRA wants the supplier's HST number, and it's never on the card statement.
The registration number comes with the receipt when the merchant prints it. The documentation is on file before anyone asks.
Our claims straddle April 2025, and half the receipts still say 15%.
Each receipt keeps the rate it was charged: 15% before April 1, 2025, 14% after.
Before and after
What changes on a Nova Scotia receipt.
Nova Scotia's HST is 14% now, and not every line on a receipt carries it. Here's the shortcut next to the receipt.
| Capability | Card statement and photos | With Smartbills |
|---|---|---|
| HST on the purchase | 14% of the total | The tax each line was charged |
| Rebated and zero-rated items | Taxed at 14% anyway | Counted as charged |
| Supplier HST number | Only if someone kept the paper | Kept with the receipt |
| Getting receipts in | Photos at month end | From the merchant or the mailbox |
